METAL SLUG ANTHOLOGY PS2 SERIES

There is also an anthology of the first 7 games in the main series (including Metal Slug X) available for the Wii, PlayStation Portable, and PlayStation 2. It was also ported to other consoles, such as the Sega Saturn, the PlayStation, the Neo-Geo Pocket Color and more recently, the Game Boy Advance, PlayStation 2, Xbox, Xbox 360 and Nintendo DS. Metal Slug is a series of run and gun video games first released on Neo-Geo arcade machines and game consoles created by SNK. You can read about the first game on Wikipedia.

And be sure to do it on PS2 it’s the best version available hands-down.The Metal Slug series of games is over 10 years old now but I only came across them for the first time last year through MAME, the arcade emulator. Whether you snatch this off the shelf immediately, wait for a price drop, or rent it for a throwback night of arcade bliss, grab a friend and put some quality time into one of SNK’s greatest franchises. You’re getting every major page of Metal Slug history, minimal load, a couple basic extras, and a ton of action. In fact, even at its $39.99 price point Anthology still delivers seven titles at just under six bucks a pop, which is an amazing deal when comparing that to Metal Slug 3 or Metal Slug 4 & 5 that released years ago on PS2 and Xbox at the same price. There was no clean-up made to the art for the PS2 release, and emulated slowdown occurs where it traditionally did back in late-90’s cabinets, but if you’re looking for one solid collection of each of the seven Metal Slug games you won’t find a better one out there. The games themselves stand up pretty well over the last ten years, though each has more of a low-res look that now accompanies the beautiful 2D animation. Menus load quicker, the games run faster (due to a lack of mid-level loading), and the ability to use the control set-up you want is priceless.

For those players, it's a no-brainer, but anyone else is forewarned that Metal Slug Anthology will feel like a one-trick pony across the seven games, though it's one of the best damn tricks you'll find in the world of 2D.Īs a true collection of the Metal Slug series, the PS2 version stands tall above the rest, as it houses the shortest load times, allows for full arcade stick support, and performs at a faster, slicker rate than its PSP and Wii buddies. Metal Slug Anthology is, at its core, a collection for the most die-hard arcade gamers. And though the games will be particularly awesome for old-school shooter fans, the repetitive nature of having seven of the same style game may not bode well for some casual players. Each of the games is either single player or two-player co-op, and all seven titles are based around the same core mechanic jump, shoot, grenade. The goal of course is to defeat the plethora of bad-ass bosses, but along the way players can rescue hostages, take alternate routes (depending on the game), and participate in a ton of mini-challenges. Players will run though five overall missions - each made up of a few stages within - grabbing uber-powerful firearms, grenades, and jumping into the saddle of extremely odd vehicles (riding a donkey with a machinegun mounted to it comes to mind, as does the uber-powerful battle camel). With that being said though, the games still hold up pretty dang well over the last decade, as they display the same kind of breakneck action as titles like Gunstar Heroes, Contra, and Alien Hominid. Along those same lines, these are arcade-perfect roms, so anywhere where slowdown was an issue (Metal Slug X is actually a remade version of Metal Slug 2, as 2 had a ridiculous amount of slowdown and gameplay oddities to it) you're still going to get it.

It's nowhere near as bad as PSP, which often took a full minute to bring up a mere portion of a game, but you'll still get initial boot-up loads of about five to ten seconds before jumping into battle. Secondly, since the games are on roms, there's a bit of load time. SNK fills in the cracks with a simple gallery mode and a text interview with the creator, but aside from the most basic of interfaces and very little extra content there's nothing here but the games. You won't find new content, you won't see any improvements in each of the games, and there really isn't a ton to the package aside from seven arcade roms. For starters, this is simply a compilation of seven ported arcade titles. When converting it over to PS2, however, a few potential issues arise.
